Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Wednesday affirmed the death sentence for Dinesh Kumar Dharne, a migrant worker convicted of the 2017 rape and murder of a five-year-old girl in Hyderabad. The court dismissed Dharne's appeal against the Metropolitan Sessions Court's ruling, agreeing that the crime falls under the category of "rarest of rare cases."
Dharne, originally from Madhya Pradesh, was found guilty of kidnapping, raping, and murdering the young girl in December 2017. The girl, who was the daughter of a migrant couple from Bihar, was lured with chocolates by Dharne, who then assaulted her in nearby bushes. To conceal his crime, Dharne brutally killed her.
At the time of the crime, Dharne and the girl's parents were employed at the same construction site in Narsingi, and Dharne had a close acquaintance with the family. When the girl went missing, Dharne initially claimed he had returned her to the construction site. However, upon further investigation, Dharne confessed to the police.
The Metropolitan Sessions Court in Ranga Reddy district convicted Dharne in February 2021, marking the first death sentence in the Cyberabad Commissionerate limits since its inception in 2003. The ruling was also the first death sentence handed down by the Ranga Reddy district court in over 30 years. Former Cyberabad Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar described the verdict as a landmark judgment, highlighting the thoroughness of the case presented against Dharne.
